The flame geometry — a narrow, tapered ovoid shape with a pointed tip — provides direct access to the gingival sulcus for subgingival preparation margin placement without the bulk displacement of surrounding soft tissue that wider bur heads cause. At 1.0 mm maximum body diameter narrowing to a 0.3 mm tip, the flame bur accesses subgingival preparation zones at depths of 0.5 to 1.0 mm below the gingival crest without impinging on the junctional epithelium.
